Manta Ray Steals $10,000 Camera From Diver

Remember the octopus that mugged a diver for his camera? That may have been just the beginning of a worrying trend -- a manta ray has now done the same to a cameraman in Hawaii.

The latest incident in the shocking underwater crime wave (sorry) happened as a team of documentary filmmakers were shooting footage of manta rays swimming off Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

As unfortunate cameraman Travis Matteson moved in closer to get a better view, he lifted his camera above his head. Before he knew what was happening, one of the rays swooped in and grabbed his camera rig with its mandible and disappeared.

Luckily for us, Travis was being filmed by his pal at the time -- meaning we get to see him hold his head in his hands as he watches nearly $10,000 worth of photo gear swimming away from him.

Amazingly, the camera and light rig were later dropped by the ray directly under the divers' boat -- after it had shot eight minutes of pretty cool footage itself. Keep reading to see the video.
